Harrison Fire Department Promotes Fire Prevention and Education

Fire Prevention Week just happened; it's a key part of fire safety and education promoted by the Harrison Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Marshall Chad Morris and Captain Bryan Wheeler appeared on KHOZ's "Around The Table on Tuesday to discuss fire safety. First, Wheeler focused on Fire Prevention Week. He said President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the week in 1925. "That actually makes it the largest public health observance in the country," he said. It was just observed last week.

For their part, the local fire team visits daycares and elementary schools to teach kids. "What I like to say is we're putting ourselves out of business, which is a good thing," Wheeler said. That teaching involves stop, drop and roll, match safety and more.

A recent edition of that education is "Close Before You Doze." Wheeler explained that it means to close bedroom doors before sleeping.

Doing that forms a "bubble," preventing the spread of smoke and heat. Later, Wheeler and Morris discussed the importance of CO2 detectors, space heater safety and other safety topics like generators. More was discussed on the broadcast.

The full interview with Wheeler and Morris is on the "Around The Table" Facebook Page.
