Edward Van Gestel, age 61, passed away on April 12, 2026.
Edward Van Gestel, known lovingly to many as Eddie, passed away on April 12, 2026, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 61. Eddie was born on May 25, 1964, in Eugene, Oregon, the youngest of eight children to parents, Louwisa (nee Tehupuring) and Wilhemus Van Gestel.
Eddie built a life centered on family, friendship, and hard work. He was a devoted father to his children, Jodi Ann Flannery, and Nicole Womack. He was also a proud brother to Anthony Van Gestel, Francisus Van Gestel, sisters, Evelyn Richey, Christina Overton, and Jane Ceal Allen. Eddie’s legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren, Hayden Bond, Cameron Bond, Liliahna Johnston, Caitlynn Westbrook, Evan Womack, Aubrey Womack, Malaysia Jenkins, Khalani Buggs, and Jaylon Webber-Hereford. He will also be remembered in the hearts of his Billy Gails family and patrons, along with his extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by sisters, Florencia Richey and Cornelia Danielson.
Eddie found great purpose in his work at Billy Gails, where he served as a cook and general manager. He loved his work and took genuine joy in getting to know the customers and visitors who came through the doors. His friendly nature and easy conversation earned him the reputation of being a social butterfly, and he made many people feel welcome and valued. Eddie understood that a meal could be more than food, and he brought care and flavor to everything he prepared. Outside of work, Eddie remained deeply devoted to the people he loved. He especially cherished his role as papa and took great pride in being present for all his grandkids. He was known for his remarkable range in the kitchen and for preparing every meal with great flavor and imagination. He also enjoyed collecting knives that held special meaning to him, treasures he hoped would be passed down through generations.
Above all, Eddie’s heart always returned to the cherished relationships he built with his family and the fellowship he found at Billy Gails. Eddie will be remembered as a kind man whose life was marked by generosity, connection, and devotion to others. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and a sense of belonging to those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, the memory of his kindness, his hard work, and his loving spirit will remain a lasting blessing to all who knew and loved him.
