An area of the Mark Twain National Forest near the Missouri-Arkansas Boarder is burning.
According to a release from the U.S. Forest Service, around 170 acres in on Fire north of the town of Seligman, which is just north of the Missouri-Arkansas Boarder in Barry County.
Cody Norris, Public Affairs Officer for the Forest Service/Mark Twain Forest, reports that while the area is not big by wildfire standards, the heavy winds coming to the region has prompted forest officials to call in a heightened response which includes their firefighters as well as the Missouri Department of Conservation and local fire districts. Norris adds one of the biggest concerns is that increasing winds could lead embers from the fire to blow outside the current fire containment area.
Facebook posts earlier from both the Seligman Fire Department and the Eagle Rock Golden Mano Fire Protection District indicate that two fires had been burning with other smaller fires beginning earlier on Thursday. The man fire has been burning since last night and continues to impact the region.
