Area leaders reflect on the Sept. 10 assassination of Christian conservative activist Charlie Kirk, calling for healing and boldness; his memorial service will be held Sept. 21.

Missouri State Representative Brian Seitz told Ozarks DynaCom's News Department that the assassination has no place in the nation and highlighted Kirk's impact. He was at the state capitol when he heard the news about Kirk. "I think it's an American tragedy," Seitz said. He continued by stating that Kirk "was so effective in reaching the youth of America." Seitz added that Kirk was assassinated for using his freedom of speech. "It is something that's un-American."

The representative also voiced his support for Kirk's family. "It never should've happened, and we're continuing to pray for his wife and family." The representative encouraged citizens not to allow the tragedy's chilling effect to freeze their voices.

Seitz said that he has promoted boldness while speaking publicly since the Turning Point USA cofounder's death. "I've encouraged individuals to be bold, to actually speak out with greater authority and not to foment hate and dissent," he said. He tied current free speech concerns to another American tragedy.

The public servant asserted that the Sept. 11 attacks sparked a "resurgence of patriotism." "Let Charlie Kirk's death be about a resurgence of free speech and First Amendment rights. It's time to speak out. It's not the time to be fearful," Seitz said.

College of the Ozarks released a statement regarding recent tragedies, including Kirk's death. "College of the Ozarks mourns the tragic loss of life and violence that occurred yesterday in our nation. Our prayers are with the families and communities directly impacted by these devastating events, including the loss of Charlie Kirk following a shooting in Utah, and the tragic shooting at a high school near Denver that left students wounded and lives shattered."

In the same statement, College of the Ozarks President Dr. Brad Johnson expressed grief and pointed to hope. “These senseless acts of violence grieve our hearts and remind us of the great need for Jesus Christ, and healing and unity, in our country,” Johnson said. “We pray for those impacted, the families who lost loved ones, and for peace and protection across our nation. As we look to the Lord in these difficult times, we rest in the truth of Scripture," he added. Johnson wasn't available to provide further comment.

Harrison Mayor Jerry Jackson posted a statement on Facebook the same day as Kirk's assassination. "It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we address the tragic news of Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting during an event at Utah Valley University earlier today. Hate has gotten completely out of control. This senseless act of political violence resulted in the loss of a prominent figure who wielded significant influence in national discourse," Jackson said.

The mayor displayed unity with other leaders and decried violence. "As the mayor of Harrison, I stand united with leaders across the political spectrum in condemning this atrocity. There is no room in our democracy for violence—political disagreements must never be settled with bullets."

Jackson closed his statement by elevating civil discourse and togetherness over cruel action and division. "At this moment of grief, we reaffirm our commitment as a community to uphold civil discourse, reject extremism, and strengthen the democratic values that bind us together. May peace prevail over violence, and unity triumph over division," Jackson said.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe’s Communications Office referred the request for comment to his social media statement.

Kehoe posted the following statement on Facebook and X. "Claudia and I are deeply saddened to hear of Charlie Kirk's passing. Political violence tears at our nation’s very foundation. America was built on passionate yet peaceful debate and freedom of expression." Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback Tour; the tour encouraged students to debate.

The Missouri governor put Kirk's work in the spotlight and emphasized the Christian activist's abiding impression on the political realm of the nation. "Charlie was an unwavering voice for conservatives across the country who raised the bar for civic engagement and political dialogue, inspiring countless young people to make their voices heard. His tireless advocacy and sharp commentary have left a lasting impact on American politics. Claudia and I continue to pray for Charlie's family, his many friends, and our country," Kehoe said.
