The Branson Police Department's Amber Edie was recognized as employee of the month in the category of "Special Commendation" for deescalating a tense situation, according to the department's chief, Eric Schmitt.
The chief explained what happened on Mach 29. An armed felony suspect barricaded himself inside a residence. Edie worked to secure the perimeter, later moving into negotiation. The chief said she's trained as a crisis negotiator.
Highlighting her ability, the chief said that Edie "kept the gentleman on the line for four hours" while Branson's SWAT team maintained the perimeter. He added that Edie worked with compassion and composure to such a degree that he agreed to surrender on the condition that the officer would arrest him.
Schmitt expressed gratitude that no shots were fired, the situation stayed calm and concluded that the department values human life. "With that, as usual, I'm extremely proud of you," Schmitt said.
Edie took time to share honor with the everyone involved. She pointed specifically to K9 officer Brendan Gamble. Edie explained that his work gave her the time to focus on the suspect.
Schmitt honored Edie during the July 8 aldermen meeting. He noted that it's the officer's second award of that kind in three months.
