A major early battle in the Civil War was commemorated on Sunday.

August 10, 1861 was the date of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek fought in an area southwest of Springfield. It was the first major Civil War Battle west of the Mississippi River and resulted in over 2,500 casualties.

The 164th anniversary of that battle was remembered during ceremonies at the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Visitor’s Center.

Missouri Seventh District Congressman Eric Burlison was one of the speakers at the event, stating that sites like Wilson’s Creek remind us of the cost of the vision and courage of those who stood in harm’s way, and the value of coming together as a nation.

More on the ceremony can be found on the Ozarks First Website.
