Discovery Quilters Coming to Shell Knob Elementary

Saturday and Sunday will mark the biennial Discovery Quilters quilt show to be held at the Shell Knob Elementary School according to a press release sent by the group.

The release states that the theme “Crazy for Quilting is a judged show showcasing the talents of our membership with a colorful display of beautiful quilts.  The show hours are Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 9-3. Attendees will be able to view our local quilter’s work, shop our vendors, visit our boutique that features many hand-made items for sale and win door prizes.”

There will be a special display of Army Sgt. Andrew Lee “The Combat Quilter” who will be traveling from Loudon, TN “to share some of his quilts and speak about his healing journey after two combat tours in Iraq. Andrew has been honored to have his “Iwo Jima” quilt hang and now reside at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, NE.”

There will be demonstrations on Saturday from 10:00-11:30. At noon on Saturday and Sunday,  Andrew Lee will have a presentation.  At 1:00 both days will have quilt turnings featuring the quilts of two of our members

Discovery Quilters members make Comfort Quilts for the Shell Knob community when there is a “death or family tragedy, Baby Quilts for The Purple Flower Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Center, Barry County Health Department, Stone County Health Department and Newborns in Need of SW Missouri. We also make Quilts of Valor or Quilts of Honor for our veterans and lap quilts for wheel care bound patients in veteran’s homes.” To assist in these efforts “we will have several beautiful adult quilts and baby quilts that will go to the highest bidder in our silent auctions. The silent auction proceeds will help us fund the machine quilting process for our ministries.”

A live miniature quilt auction will happen at 2:00 on Sunday with 100% of the proceeds going to the Alliance of Churches. “We encourage everyone to come out to be able to purchase one of these small masterpieces and help the Alliance of Churches to be able to further their mission of providing food for those in need as well as emergency assistance and the back-to-school program that benefits every student in the Shell Knob school system with school supplies.” The show will close on Sunday at 3:00 with viewer’s choice award and the drawing of the “original designed opportunity quilt.” The release states that masks are encouraged for social responsibility.
