A Douglas County Suspect is caught after going to a house to ask for assistance which just happened to be the home of a law enforcement officer.
According to a post from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, 46-year-old Jason Smith of Bruner was arrested on charges of theft for reportedly stealing an UTV on December 31st. A person contacted the sheriff's office about somebody trespassing on their property then recognized the vehicle he was driving as belonging to a family member.
After the report was made and an investigation got underway, Smith approached a house about getting some assistance about a low tire on the UTV. The house happened to be the residence of Douglas County Deputy Shawn Wilson who was off-duty but aware of the investigation into the theft.
According to the post, Smith was arrested on the spot, the UTV returned to its rightful owner, and Smith is now in the Douglas County Jail on a $5000 cash only bond.
