How do fireworks get their colors? It’s all chemistry

Fireworks lit up the night sky through the long holiday weekend. While watching the show, you may have wondered, ‘How do they get their vivid colors?’ It all comes down to a little bit of chemistry.

Do you remember the periodic table from junior high? It’s those elements and minerals that give fireworks their colors.

One of the most used minerals in the human body is magnesium. Not only does magnesium help bones, nerves, and muscles, but it also colors fireworks white. According to the USGS, magnesium is mined from the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
