Missouri Supreme Court to review controversial photo ID law

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Supreme Court will decide on two election law cases, including a 2022 measure that attempted to fix provisions from a voter-approved constitutional amendment from 2016 that required an ID in order for Missourians to vote.

In the first case, NAACP of Missouri v. the State of Missouri, attorneys for several groups argued that the law violates the constitution by prohibiting voters without an ID from voting.

“These ideas that we should diminish the ability of the electorate– those who pay taxes, who contribute to society– to be able to participate in one of the most fundamental practices that we as citizens have: voting,” said Nimrod Chapel Jr., of the NAACP of Missouri.
