The Boone County Sheriff’s Office, along with other agencies in the State of Arkansas, has been made aware of a new scam text message which Arkansans have started receiving this morning. The message appears to be an automated notification claiming to be from the Arkansas Department of Transportation. It informs the recipient of an outstanding traffic ticket and warns that if the fine is not paid by the following day, vehicle registration and driving privileges will be suspended. The message also threatens a 35% service fee, potential criminal prosecution, and other consequences. A payment link is included for the recipient to resolve the alleged fine. THIS IS A SCAM and residents are advised to delete the message and take no further action. DO NOT REPLY and DO NOT CLICK any external links which may be present in the message. If you are ever concerned about the validity of a received text message from someone claiming to be a government agency, please contact the originating agency or the Boone County Sheriff’s Office for advice. Thank you.
