Tonya Bardin on Joining the Daughters of America, July Fourth Event, and More

Tonya Bardin Sherburne recalls discovering that she's a Daughter of the American Revolution and an upcoming event.

Bardin appeared on KHOZ's "Around The Table" to discuss this event, the discovery and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Let Freedom Ring is on July 4 on the Square's gazebo at 11 a.m. Boy Scout Trope 60 will attend and help.

The event, which Bardin planned, focuses on the "next generation of patriots, which is our children." She said children need to learn that America is amazing and why it is. Bardin also talked about finding out that she and her family were eligible to join DAR.

She got the news in 2018. She and her family actually joined together. It all started with her oldest aunt.

Bardin said her aunt said she wanted to join before she died. Bardin said her mom worked through an entire winter and discovered it.

Because of that, Bardin, her mom and Bardin's three aunts are all in DAR. In addition, she has cousins in the group.

She said the benefit of the group is knowing she's volunteering for a "great organization." There's a requirement to join.

"But to be a DAR member, you have to prove your lineage, that you had a patriot that fought in the American Revolution in some way" she said.

For Bardin, it was her grandfather Augustine Sims. She said he was in the infantry and served for a total of about eight months. He walked for four months to arrive in North Carolina at the battle's conclusion and had to return home.

More information about the DAR is available online.

The full interview with Bardin is on the "Around The Table" Facebook Page.
