The Presiding Commissioner of Stone County is one of several appointed officials that may be at risk of losing their position if a filibuster in the Missouri Senate is not ended.
Gordon Weathers was appointed last year to fill the unexpired term of Mark Maples who resigned last summer. Weathers was appointed by Governor Mike Kehoe and though Weathers was sworn into office, his appointment came while the Senate was in recess and by law, all appointments must be approved by the Senate within 30 days of the session getting started.
During an interview Tuesday on KRZK's "The Upside with Josh and Them", Weathers explained that a group of democratic senators are filibustering in protest to the speed that many things happen in government. The filibuster has prevented Weathers and 94 other appointees from getting confirmed by the Senate. Weathers says that if the appointments do not get Senate approval by Friday, they are nullified and would make those positions vacant again. Weathers says though he could run for the position in the November Election, he could not be reappointed to the position.
Weathers says that negotiations are underway to end the filibuster and credits Senator Brad Hudson with trying to help resolve the situation.
