Where do hurricane names come from?

In the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, some people are wondering, ‘Where do these names come from?’ The naming of tropical storms goes back several centuries, but it wasn’t until 1979 the current naming system was put in place.

There’s a long and drawn-out history of tropical names but we will hit some of the highlights:

  • 1800’s – The earliest evidence of named storms is found in Puerto Rico. Storms would be named after the saint of the day from the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar for the day the hurricane struck. There is also evidence of storms being named of places and things.

  • Hollister Schools Foundation donates $4,000 for Therapy Dog

    The Hollister Schools Foundation has presented a $4,000 check to the Hollister R-V School District, funds raised during last spring’s "Coins for a Cause" fundraiser. The generous donation will be used to help purchase two therapy dogs for the district, set to debut at the start of the 2025-2026 school year. The check was presented to Superintendent Dr. Brian Wilson and Assistant Superintendent of District Operations, Dr. Sean Woods, by foundation board members Katie Adams, Ryan Gdovin, and Denise Olmstead.
