WIC Program Gets Funds Transferred To Continue as Government Shutdown Moves into Third Week

A program that is important to many families with infants and young children will be able to continue for a time during the U.S. Government Shutdown.

According to information posted through various media sources including the Arkansas Advocate, the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program will be sustained through the month of October with funds transferred from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child Nutrition Programs Account.

According to the reports, the department will transfer $300 million to the program that families rely on for supplying healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and referrals to other services for families with newborn babies. The reports add that the funding is a short-term fix but the program could face challenges if the government shutdown continues long-term.

On October 1, the Government Shutdown went into effect when the Trump Administration as well as Republican and Democratic Lawmakers could not come up with an agreement to continue to fund the government. The shutdown is now entering its third week.
