Marsha “Penny” Lorraine Gustafson, age 76, passed away on October 9, 2025.
Marsha “Penny” Lorraine Gustafson, age 76, of Kimberling City, Missouri, (formerly of Essex, Iowa), went to be with the Lord on October 9, 2025, still making jokes until the very end.
Born in Red Oak, Iowa, Penny was one of a kind—known for her quick wit, sharp sarcasm, and the ability to make anyone laugh, whether they wanted to or not. She had a gift for finding humor in every situation and could lighten up a room faster than her famous smirk could fill it. Penny loved her family fiercely and spent much of her time surrounded by them—cooking, joking, and keeping everyone in line (or at least trying to). She also loved her church family where she faithfully served, especially on Wednesday nights cooking for the kids. If you left her kitchen hungry, that was your own fault.
She is survived by her children: Troy Ross and wife, Kristi, Trent Ross and wife, Michelle, Elly Stoaks and special friend, Steve McMillin, and Justin Ross and special friend, Leslie Sheridan; her siblings: Danny Lawson, Jackie Woods, Annita Reich and husband, Gene, Corey Lawson and wife, Karen, and Farin Lawson and wife, Stephanie; grandchildren: Garret Ross, Ashle Holmes and husband, Cliff, Paige Stoaks and special friend, Noah Greene, Kahner Stoaks, Emma Ross and special friend, Brandon Flathers, Michael Pedersen and wife, Morgan, Keisha Fichter and husband, Jeremy, and Colby Pedersen and wife, Michala; thirteen great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends; who will never forget her humor and sass.
Penny was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ted Gustafson; parents, Luther and Beulah Lawson, infant twin brother, Dennis; great-grandson, Noah Holmes; sister-in-law, Sharon Lawson; and brother-in-law, Mel Woods—all of whom we imagine are welcoming her home with open arms and maybe ducking from a playful jab or two.
A celebration of Penny’s life will be held at a later date, where laughter (and probably dessert) will be required.
Her laughter, love, and legendary sarcasm will live on in every story told, every meal shared, and every smile she left behind.
